I had this ice maker for over 3 years and it made good clear ice but today it is no longer making ice today :( The water runs but it no longer freezes. I am now going to have to look into getting a new one. I don™€™t know if i will buy whirlpool again bc i feel that it should have lasted for more than 3 years for the price i paid for it. When it works - it's great to have. Problem is that they only last about 6 years - TOPS. And that is ONLY if you take really good care of it - filter the water, change the filter on time, clean with ice machine cleaner about twice a year, and keep it ventilated with a fan during hot months. I speak with a lot of experience over many years of owing these machines at different homes. It is now a very expensive luxury at $1800+++. Doubled in price over the past several years.

Bad pre-delivery comms/customer service

I have not yet received the unit, so this is more a warning to potential buyers that Whirlpool's order management and communications are terrible. I had a delivery date set for more than a month after purchase, received multiple vague emails saying my order was delayed, some without new dates. Some did have new dates, which turned out to be incorrect. I chatted with them 3 times, each time it took 30m to an hour for a chat representative to even answer the chat. I don't know how Whirlpool thinks that this is acceptable. If the unit is delayed and you don't know when it will be available, just say that. Don't set a new date which is also incorrect, making me re-plan my week for no reason. And fix the hold times on your chat/phone system.

I really don™€™t recommend buying this product. After installation, the machine gaved me 1 full bucket of ice that it!. I called Whirlpool for the tech, he came I don™€™t remember how many times but the machine never worked. One Day I call to get an update, they said the warranty is over, they can offer me a discount on a new one. So I paid $1,500 plus taxes for one bucket of ice, it™€™s kind of expensive for ONE bucket of ice. I used to always purchase Whirlpool products, even in my rentals plus I manage a building material store who now sells appliances, guess what, I won™€™t be shy to explain customer service received from Whirlpool to my customers.

Great machine, low noise & great ice taste quality

We have been looking for over a year for an 'Ideal' ice maker. After researching tons of choices, it boiled done to 'Clear Ice' technology from a reputable manufacturer. We also had a debate on where to install it and we finally figured out it would fit nicely between the washer and dryer in laundry room, which also had the water and drain connection behind washing machine (needed to order pump too). Whirlpool had this on sale, so we ordered it, installed it and are very happy with the operation, low noise level and excellent quality ice made.

Not usable at our home

I purchased this icemaker to help us ice during boating season and save us from buying bags and bags of ice. We plugged in the icemaker in our garage and it started making ice right away and quickly. In the morning our garage floor was covered with water that leaked from the icemaker. Only after researching we learned that it's intended to be installed over a drain or have a pump/hose connected to drain outside. We don't have a drain available or want to pay additional money for a pump. When I contacted customer service, they said it couldn't be returned since it was already installed. I let them know we didn't "install" it, only plugged it in, but still not able to return it. Now I'm left with an icemaker that we can't use and out the $1,100 paid for it.

This is our second identical ice maker and we love the ice it produces which is perfect for drinks. The ice is clear in 3/4" x 1/2" squares and remains frozen in the reservoir unlike most machines so it lasts much longer in drinks and does not waste water. Daily ice output should be plenty for a family and guests and it is perfectly sized for replacing a trash compactor in the kitchen. Great product when maintained properly with timely cleaning intervals.

Watch out for moisture issues at drain and trap!

I installed this unit 2 weeks ago which replaced the 2005 version of this ice maker. This new model has a process cycle that separates the minerals from the water. It then goes through a "flushing" cycle that purges the minerals that were separated out. It dumps the water out so vigorously that it splashes water out if you have an air gap drainage system. It is just a few drops each cycle, but adds up with each new cycle. Another problem with this flushing process is that it is not directed through a tube. Instead it passes through the ice in the storage bin on the way to the drain hole at the bottom of the storage bin and chills the water. This chilled water sits in the trap and causes condensation issues. I have been struggling to solve these 2 major issues. I solved the splashing issue by adding a 3" to 2" reducer bushing to the 2" drain that had worked perfectly on my old unit for over 18 years. Still trying to sort out the condensation issue which I expect to get even worse this summer when it warms up and the humidity levels rise. I am lucky to have a basement and was able to see these moisture issues before I rotted out the hardwood flooring, sub-flooring, and floor joist. I recommend that the Whirlpool engineers add a 2nd drain tube for the water being discharged during the flushing cycle to keep it from passing directly through the ice which would reduce the degree of chilling to the water that sits in the trap between cycles.

Ice melts fast and Wastes tons of water

I bought this ice maker for a beachfront home in Belize. Who doesn™€™t want a lot of ice for their drinks and boat coolers in Belize? Well, I didn™€™t realize these are not insulated and so the ice is always melting.. We are on a rainwater cistern that is filtered. We have to be careful not to waste water in the dry season. This ice maker loses over 5 gallons of water a night from ice melt!! The ice maker does not reuse the melted ice water. It just drains into the waterline. We had to turn it off. Only use it for very rare occasions. So disappointed!

Great Icemaker in spite of maintenance issues

I have had 3 of these undercounter icemakers. The first I bought in 1993 and sold with my house in 2004. I had to have it repaired twice during that time. The second I bought for my current house in 2015. I had it repaired twice due to the sensor that cuts off the ice when the storage box is full. It failed again recently and was not repairable due to a compressor failure. Despite the maintenance issues, I love the icemaker. It makes beautiful clear ice and at around $2000 is the least expensive unit I could find that makes the demineralized ice. Having ice at around 32 degrees makes it great for carbonated beverages, tea, water or whatever. It is flavorless so it does not impact the taste of whatever you are putting it into. It is great for ice packs too. One improvement would be to remove the small lip on the storage holder for the scoop. When the storage bin is full, ice often gets into the holder for the scoop and keeps it from being put back in completely and that blocks the door from closing. I took the holder off and used my Dremel to remove the lip and it now allows the scoop to easily push out any ice that gets into the holder and then it will go fully into place allowing the door to close. Nothing but issues with this ice maker

Here we go again. Woke up this morning to ice maker not making ice again....This unit is a replacement for the model identical to it. That one lasted about 8 years. About a month after the warranty was out, it would not turn back on after we had turned it off to go on an extended vacation. After messing around with it for about a week, it started working again on its own. I have had issues with it not making ice and seems to reset itself after turning it off and letting it set for an hour or so. New issue this morning. Unit was beeping every 15 mins or so. When I opened the door, there was little ice in it. Tried to "reset" the unit. When it started to fill up with water, if just kept filling up the pan. Had to turn the unit off to get the water to stop running....Very aggravated with this unit. We did not have these issues with the previous one. I feel appliances are not being made to the old standards and with pride anymore. They are not built to last anymore. Will replace with different brand if unable to get it working again. For the price, it should of lasted more than 17 month....

The unit works as advertised. It makes plenty of ice. Unfortunately, it also freezes up into large ice blocks if you aren't emptying it fairly regularly. Even though the unit is advertised as being either right or left opening, you can only order it right hand opening. Lowes will NOT switch the door for you when it is delivered, no matter what they tell you. I did it myself. I also had the unit installed by a plumber, to be sure the auxiliary water pump and all of the plumbing was hooked up properly. I run mine with the water filter installed. Overall, other than having to switch the door myself, we are happy to have ice now at our outdoor patio bar.

Have to replace filters too often

We installed this just before Christmas 2022. It was a replacement for a Kenmore that we had for 7 years. It makes perfect ice, but we have had to replace the water filter in it twice since installing. It just stops making ice and does not signal that the filter needs replacing. But, once the filter is changed out, works fine again. The filters are supposed to only need replacing about every 6 months. The filters are $50+, so this is going to be quite expensive.

Quality doesn™€™t show

We love the ice. This was the fourth ice maker we have had in 15 years under the counter in our kitchen. They were trashed when one had a messed up controller and the other two loss refrigerant. This new one arrived with a bolt screwed in crooked and the Whirlpool label applied crooked, but it makes ice! I saved the door handle lip and water pump from the last one so if they failed, I didn™€™t have to order new ones.
